Nissan’s Brand New Electric Supermini
Nissan is revving up excitement once again, this time by teasing the idea of a brand-new electric supermini that could hit European roads as early as 2026. And while we South African fans might have to wait a little longer, there’s plenty to be excited about. This isn’t just any new model. It’s a bold step into the A-segment, backed by cutting-edge technology, clever design, and big ambition.
Let’s take a closer look at what’s in the works, and why this could be a major moment for urban mobility.
More than a decade after saying goodbye to the Nissan Pixo, Nissan is planning a triumphant return to the compact city car category in Europe. The brand’s CEO, Makoto Uchida, recently confirmed that Nissan will be developing a new A-segment EV: something small, smart, and packed with everyday practicality.
The project is still in the early stages, but here’s the kicker… It’ll be developed in collaboration with Ampere, Renault’s EV tech partner. This alliance is all about sharing expertise, cutting development times, and bringing costs down, without cutting corners on quality or features. The new Nissan will be built on the same platform as the future Renault Twingo EV, which means it’ll be tried, tested, and tuned for urban life.
While no official name or final design has been revealed yet, Nissan has confirmed that this upcoming EV will be unique to the brand. So even though it’ll share a platform with the Twingo and Dacia’s new city car, the final vehicle will be unmistakably Nissan, most likely styled in London at the Nissan Design Europe studio in Paddington.
Think zippy, compact, and packed with clever details. This new EV is expected to be built on the AmpR Small platform, the same one used for Renault’s latest compact electric vehicles, like the Renault 5 E-Tech and 4 E-Tech. It’s a smart choice that brings proven electric efficiency to the table, and it could form the basis for the next Micra EV too.
Let’s be honest, electric vehicles are getting cooler by the day, but they’ve still got a reputation for being pricey. That’s where this little wonder comes in. Nissan’s goal is to deliver “convenience and advanced functionality at an attractive and affordable price.”
Translated? A city-friendly EV that feels premium without the premium price tag. It’s the kind of car you’d want for school runs, work commutes, and grocery dashes, but still stylish enough for weekend road trips with your crew.
And it fits right in with Nissan’s bigger electric ambitions. With over 200,000 LEAF units sold since 2010, and a next-gen LEAF on the way, Nissan is clearly building out a future where EVs aren’t just for early adopters, they’re for everyone.
Here’s the real talk: this supermini EV isn’t heading to South African showrooms just yet. But that doesn’t mean it’s off the table. As EV infrastructure improves and consumer demand grows here at home, the arrival of smaller, more affordable electric cars could shift from distant dream to real possibility.
At Group1 Nissan, we’re keeping a close eye on global developments and cheering on the kind of innovation that could change how we drive, both locally and abroad.
This project is part of a broader Alliance effort between Nissan and Renault to streamline EV production, reduce development costs, and give drivers more accessible, sustainable options. Alongside the Micra EV, new LEAF models, and a host of Renault and Dacia models, the upcoming Nissan supermini is poised to join a fast-expanding family of smart, future-focused vehicles.
And let’s not forget, Ampere has even more in the pipeline, including cobalt-free battery technology and lightning-fast charging in under 15 minutes. By 2028, we could be looking at electric vehicles that are even more efficient, more affordable, and more exciting than ever before.
