More Mitsubishi Dealerships Expand The Local Footprint

Mitsubishi dealers are growing in numbers
Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) has had a busy few years albeit somewhat under the radar. In addition to a few new vehicle launches, they are now expanding their local footprint by opening more Mitsubishi dealerships. This comes on the back of a highly successful 2021 with noticeable growth in sales. They saw an increase of 47.5% compared to the same period in 2019 and 71.5% more than in 2020. “Last year will be remembered as one of recovery and consolidation for the local automotive industry,” said Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).
New Mitsubishi Dealerships Mean Increased Market Share
The addition of 6 new Mitsubishi dealerships is indicative of MMSA bucking the trend and increasing its overall market share as a result. That takes the total number of Mitsubishi dealerships to 101 with 48 sales dealers and 53 aftersales dealers across the country.
According to Nic Campbell, the general manager at MMSA, “With the introduction of the Xpander, Mitsubishi is now competing in a completely different price range and segment than before. As such, our sales volumes have been positively impacted. It also speaks to MMSA’s customer-first focus of bringing out the right product for the market at the right time, with a competitive value proposition.”
The new Mitsubishi dealerships are a continuation of the brand’s approach to the strategic placement of such facilities to capitalise further on the ever-growing popularity of the Mitsubishi brand. Steven Terblans, the general aftersales manager added:“It goes hand in hand with our targeted new model strategy and aims to continue bringing new customers into the Mitsubishi fold. A brand is only as strong as its dealer network, and Mitsubishi is fortunate enough to currently find itself on a very firm footing indeed.”
Flaunting A New Corporate Identity
The new Mitsubishi dealerships all showcase the automaker’s refreshed corporate identity, which they introduced in South Africa in April 2021. Jeff Allison, Marketing Manager at MMSA said: “These facilities communicate our vision, purpose, values, cultures and behaviour by using images, styles, colours and themes that represent the brand. We wanted to create spaces that are attractive and inviting, allowing customers to interact with our products in environments that appeal to the senses.”
Mitsubishi Dealerships Providing Exceptional Customer Service
The results of the latest National Automobile Dealers’ Association dealer satisfaction index survey clearly reflect the commitment of MMSA’s dealer network. Their dealerships not only achieved gold status but they were also recognised as the most improved overall brand in 2021 (+10.6%).
According to the data, Mitsubishi’s customer service index results improved from 91.5% in 2017. Between then and the end of 2021, it jumped to 95.42%, which is well above the preset target of 93.5%. A big contributor to this incredible performance is the introduction of Mitsubishi’s ‘fix right first-time’ strategy. It seems to be one of the most crucial factors in their overall service experience.
Terblans continued by saying: “We want to ensure that the customer experience is aligned with the expectations of our loyal customer base. Expectations change and evolve, and so do we, and for this reason, we are continuously improving and embracing change. Our aim is to create lifetime customer loyalty and the only way to boost our retention rate is to provide excellent service.”
Over and above the new Mitsubishi dealerships creating some excitement around the brand, more is to come in 2022. It looks like MMSA has plans to expand or upgrade most of its existing model ranges. The Mitsubishi Triton lives in the high end of the market in terms of what it offers, but its pricing has always been aggressively affordable. Now Mitsubishi has thrown down a very serious gauntlet with the GL M/T 4×2 priced R115K lower than the next trim level.
This new Triton seems to be aimed at fleet owners, SMEs and those looking for a double cab lifestyle at a very good price.
We all know features add to the price, especially in the double cab space. Mitsubishi did some careful cutting to reach this exceptional price, but the GL is by no means a box on wheels.
The most noticeable difference is the engine. While still the familiar 2.4-litre intercooled turbo-diesel, it produces 100kW and 324 Nm versus the 133 kW and 430 Nm of the more expensive models. Power is transmitted via a six-speed manual through a limited-slip differential to the rear wheels.
You get a touchscreen sound system that can be upgraded to Apple/Android connectivity, electric windows and side mirrors. You also get auto air conditioning.
The standard leather upholstery has been replaced with quite good looking dark grey fabric. There is a centre armrest with a cup holder, a four-spoke urethane steering wheel, a USB port and a 12v accessory socket. The GL rides on 16-inch alloy wheels.
On the safety side, it is also full service, with front airbags, ABS, EBD and brake override system, DRL lamp on the bumper and ISOFIX child seat anchors in the back.
Like all Triton models, the GL comes with a 3-year/100 000km warranty and a 5-year/90 000km service plan.
Priced at well under R500K, starting at only R480 995, the GL fills a very prominent gap in the demanding double cab market. If you can live with fabric upholstery and rear-wheel drive only, the GL offers you the ride and build quality of a Mitsubishi Triton at a great price. We suspect the compelling combination of price and features will attract smaller businesses and a large chunk of lifestyle buyers who up to now had to settle for less appealing options.

A More Affordable Trim Level For The Mitsubishi ASX

The Mitsubishi ASX SUV
The Mitsubishi ASX is the compact member of the extended Mitsubishi SUV range. It has been with us since 2011 and over that time has seen numerous upgrades and range shuffles that have kept it fresh and appealing in this most competitive segment of the South African market. The ASX is primarily an urban family vehicle, but it can take care of itself on dirt roads.
Entry into the ASX range has now become more affordable with the introduction of the new ES trim level. The ES has fewer features but the ASX gives away a whopping R50K on the top-range LS models.
The most obvious feature differences are the glass roof on the LS, manual instead of auto aircon, and the omission of Apple/Android infotainment system, although that is an optional extra.
As for the rest, the Mitsubishi ASX ES is a pretty feature-rich car and will give most discerning drivers an excellent drive. While saving R50K, you still get daytime running lights, a multi-function steering wheel with cruise control, rear parking distance and camera, 16” alloy wheels, electronic traction control and hill start assist. You also get LED brake lights, LED taillights, LED reverse lights and a rear spoiler with a high-mounted stop lamp.
Mitsubishi has also not cut back on safety, with the ES giving you the get driver, passenger and knee airbags, collapsable steering column, the standard reinforced impact safety body, side-impact bars, active stability and traction control, ISOFIX child seat anchors, ABS and EBD, as well as the brake assist system. The keyless operating system opens the car within 70cm of the car and once inside, you can start the car with a button.
As with the other ASX models, the ES comes with a three-year/100 000km warranty and a three-year 60 000km service plan, with intervals at 15 000km.
The engine is also the same, the 2.0L MIVEC that gives you 110kW at 6000rpm and 197Nm at 4200rpm through the front wheels. You have a choice of the 5-speed manual or CVT transmission, the former giving you a braked towing capacity of 1260kg and CVT 750kg.
The ASX has been the most successful Mitsubishi model in South Africa, selling more than 9 300 cars since its launch in 2011. With this new model, offering a compelling price/feature balance, the ES is sure to add to the records set by the ASX so far.

Two Awards In Two Countries For The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Car awards are a dime a dozen. Almost every car ever has won some award – I can think of a couple that did not, but let’s not go there. But when the same car wins two awards, on different sides of the earth, for different reasons, there is something there.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has just won AutoPacific Vehicle Satisfaction Award in the States, while over in Japan the evolved plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) systems of the Eclipse Cross won the RJC Technology of the Year. RJC is the Automotive Researchers’ and Journalists’ Conference of Japan, which is a mouthful and probably why they just call it RJC.
Let’s look at the American award first. This award is for the car that is most satisfying to drive – so pretty straightforward. The Eclipse Cross got the highest score in the Compact Crossover SUV category, beating a strong field that included the likes of the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and Subaru Crosstrek.
This award has 36 categories, of which the Eclipse Cross either equalled or beat the other contenders in 32. Areas that stood out was the stylish interior and exterior design, driver’s seat comfort and good visibility, ease of getting in and out of the vehicle and the generous factory warranties. The Cross was found to have a high-quality build and of course the NHTSA 5-Star Safety Rating.
The Japanese reward is more technical and speaks to the specific attributes of the evolved plug-in-hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and the Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC).
The PHEV Eclipse Cross uses the same groundbreaking optimised twin-motor 4WD from the revolutionary Outlander. This combines a quiet drive with powerful, stable driving, smooth acceleration and nimble handling. The electrification and all-wheel control give the driver a combination of safety, peace of mind and comfort.
This is the fifth time Mitsubishi has won the RTC Technology of year, having first done so back in ’93 with the (flashback) Galant and a model called the Eterna.

Electric Cars Need Not Be Boring – Enter Mitsubishi Outlander

The NEW Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
We all know electric and hybrid and hydrogen will be the drivers of our future cars. The costs of renewables are plummeting, while the ease of using them is improving rapidly, and in the background, Mother Nature has folded her arms and is tapping one foot in an increasingly menacing way. So we are all doomed to drive things that look like the Prius in future? Actually, no. Have a look at this if you think future motoring is going to be quiet and well behaved and really boring.
It is a race open to women only, with only compasses, maps and so allowed for navigation. A gruelling 2000km of rough desert from Nevada to California. So two women, a Sergeant Major and a Master Sargent in the US military entered the challenging challenge in the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – an SUV, plug-in hybrid. Their vehicle was modified, but the standard Outlander has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder and two electric motors that together give you 142kW and 186Nm of torque.
And they came third. How boring is that in the greater scheme of things? Sure, they were allowed time to charge their batteries, but that does not detract from their ability. The sheer motoring grunt required to get a podium finish against “normal” cars shines a bright light on the electrified cars of the future.
Topline EVs will demolish everything, including superbikes, on a standing quarter mile. In the States, hybrid and full EV Ford F250s will power your house or business if weather knocks out the power. In China and India cheap EVs are helping fight the scourge of air pollution while transporting entire families and selected domestic and agricultural livestock over great distances.
Vehicles electrified in some way or the other will be the shape of our motoring future. Like all internal combustion cars of today, they will come in a range, from cheap and nasty to really wow. The Outlander has just shown how wow wow can be.
But most of us will never enter a rally and will demand that our car does what we want it to do as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. And that, dear readers, describes the Mitsubishi Outlander in a nutshell.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Boasts Four Decades Of Setting Standards

The Mitsubishi Pajero has been around for 40 years!
It is one of the iconic and most loved SUVs in the world, city slick with true off-road capability. The 2021 Both the Mitsubishi Pajero LWB and Sport are true head-turners, solid cars for drivers who demand power, build quality and performance. We all know someone who drives a Pajero, and many of them have driven the same one for many years. The Pajero has been around for a while. Do you know how long exactly? When was the first Mitsubishi Pajero made?
First Generation
The cold war was in full swing. Maggie and Ronnie ruled the West, with Andropov head of the Soviet Union. The first CD players are sold, playing the new Police song Every Breath You take and MAW’s Land Down Under. That was back in 1983 when the first generation Pajero was launched. It featured all-wheel drive three and five-door early SUV bodies, as well as a few soft-top options. In some markets, they were called the Shogun or Montero. The engines ranged from inline-four petrol to a V6 and a couple of diesels as well.
The top of the range 3.0-litre V6 put out 103 kW and could go 0 to 100km/h in about 12 seconds, with a top speed close to 160km/h, rather hot for the day.
So popular was that first generation that it was built, with some facelifts, until 1991.
Generation Two
The next iteration of the Pajero was unleashed in 1992, also with inline-four or V6 motors in mid-sized 3- and 5-door versions. This was the generation that set the Pajero’s off-road credentials, competing in the most gruelling races like the Paris-Dakar Rally. In fact, the Pajero Evolution was built and sold to meet the Dakar homologation criteria.
Generation Three
Born in 2000, the 3rd generation had a new, larger body. It introduced torque vectoring technology that could detect the type of terrain and adjust the power and torque accordingly. It also featured a new 3.8-litre V6 and a 3.2-litre turbo diesel. The 3.8 engine gave 182 kW and could get a top speed of 200km/h.
The Current Generation
The Pajero was class-leading when it came out, and Mitsubishi kept it up to date with new tech, even though there were four generations in forty years. South Africans now have a choice of the large, capable Mitsubishi Pajero LWB or three trim levels of the luxury, 7-seater, super-capable Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
The LWB comes with 4 WD, rear diff lock, electrically adjusted driver seat, six airbags, rearview camera and more. It has the 3.2-litre Direct Injection Diesel Engine that gives you 140kW and a massive 441 Nm of torque.
The Sport comes with a choice of 4×2 or 4×4, the very capable 2.4 MIVEC Turbo Diesel with 133 kW and 430 Nm. It has all the luxury and safety features you would expect and more and gives a smooth and superior ride in town while being able to take on the most challenging off-road conditions with ease.
After nearly 40 years of setting SUV standards, the Pajero is still the luxury go-anywhere choice for many South Africans and any car that keeps setting standards for so long is worth a second look.

Why The Mitsubishi Xpander 7-Seater Is A Worthy Contender

Mitsubishi Xpander 7-seater is already a favourite!
The brand-new offering from the Japanese automaker combines the versatility of an MPV with the sportiness of an SUV. The multi-purpose Mitsubishi Xpander is making waves in a hotly contested market and could become a South African favourite. It’s no surprise, really, as the Mitsubishi Xpander is not only more affordable than similar 7-seaters from other brands but it comes with features you might not expect at this price point.
Mitsubishi Xpander: Rising Through The Ranks
Since the 2016 launch of the Mitsubishi Xpander in Asia, the car has been a resounding success. It’s no different in South Africa as July 2021 showed that the Xpander was Mitsubishi’s second best-selling car with 65 new units which is just two units shy of the much more established Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
While the figures may not seem mind-blowing, it’s almost on par with a Mitsubishi stalwart and that in itself is a worthy statement. Still relatively new compared to other 7-seaters, the Mitsubishi Xpander is already showing its worth and here is a closer look at the styling aspects, technology and performance.
Striking Looks At A Highly Competitive Price
The first thing you’ll notice on the Mitsubishi Xpander is the futuristic-looking front design, taking inspiration from the Mitsubishi Triton and Pajero Sport. Unlike many other 7-seaters that don’t cost a fortune, the Xpander has the interior of a multi-purpose vehicle but it’s all SUV action on the outside.
The daytime running lights, grille, fog and headlights appear as one complete piece which is certainly something different but it’s not out of place against a white body colour. With sporty 15-inch alloy wheels on the manual model and 16-inch on the automatic derivative, wide flared fenders, the Mitsubishi Xpander looks tougher than similar cars in the segment.
The headlights are crystal clear combined with daytime running lights and L-illuminated LED taillights flowing seamlessly onto the tailgate to add further impetus to the overall look. It has a higher ground clearance of 205 mm which is just another feature that not only adds flavour but it also emphasises its sporty but practical capabilities.
Incredible Attention To Detail
The basic interior is what you’d expect with parts like the dashboard and door panels made from hard plastic. However, the quality of workmanship is second to none following the principle of ‘Omotenashi’ for the driver and passengers. Loosely translated, it means “attention to detail and anticipating the guests’ needs.”
A closer look will reveal features with a stitching pattern to emulate a leather trim stitching. Standard features include the following:
- Multi-function steering wheel
- Tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column
- All-around electric windows
- Bluetooth with hands-free voice control
- USB port
- Three 12V sockets
- Full-automatic air conditioning
- Rear air circulator
The multi-information display is not overly massive but it has everything you need and, more importantly, it’s easy to use.
The Mitsubishi Xpander is certainly not short on space as there is ample room across the board thanks to the 60/40 split. It gets even bigger when you fold down the third row of seats and unlike some other brands, it goes completely flat.
Mitsubishi Xpander Performance and Fuel Economy
The new Mitsubishi Xpander seems to have it all figured out with good performance, fuel consumption and reduced noise. According to Mitsubishi, it’s made possible thanks to their durable 1.5-litre DOHC 16-valve aluminium block engine.
It features Mitsubishi’s Intelligent Innovative Valve Timing Lift Electronic Control (MIVEC) system and ECI multipoint fuel injection. This particular powertrain delivers 77kW at 6000rpm, with 141Nm of peak torque at 4000rpm.
With a fuel tank of 45 litres, the average claimed fuel consumption in a combined cycle is 6.9l/100km on the manual Xpander and 7l/100km for the automatic model. The Xpander is available with a four-speed automatic and five-speed manual gearbox.
The Mitsubishi Xpander Is Safe As Houses
Considering its classified as a people carrier, the new Mitsubishi Xpander features a wide range of innovative safety features as standard. The Xpander is designed to protect the driver, all of the passengers and other road users with these safety features:
- Airbags for the driver and front passenger
- Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
- Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)
- Side-impact protection bars
- Side-impact beam
- Pedestrian protection
- Child protection rear door locks
- Seatbelt pre-tensioners with force limiters

With a price of only R299 995* for the manual and R319 995* for the automatic, and all the standard features, the Mitsubishi Xpander is a solid contender among other formidable 7-seaters. It will go up against cheaper competition like the Toyota Avanza and Renault Triber but with so much more on offer.
