Renault’s recent unveiling of the Renault 4 E-Tech has taken the automotive world by storm, but it’s not just the electric vehicle itself that’s turning heads. To push the boundaries of electric mobility, Renault has teamed up with a range of innovative French start-ups, creating the 4 Movements project.
This exciting collaboration shines a spotlight on four groundbreaking electric modes of transport that embody the future of sustainable travel—on land, sea, and even in the air. Let’s take a closer look at these visionary partnerships and what they mean for the evolution of electric mobility.
At its core, the Renault 4 E-Tech represents a bold leap towards a more sustainable future, blending heritage with cutting-edge technology. To celebrate its release, Renault has partnered with four inventive start-ups to showcase how electric mobility can extend far beyond the traditional vehicle. These collaborations, each a unique project in its own right, demonstrate just how versatile and far-reaching electric transportation can be.
For those who love the open road and the great outdoors, Renault has joined forces with Carapate Aventure, a Nantes-based start-up, to introduce a compact, electric mini-caravan that pairs perfectly with the Renault 4 E-Tech. Weighing in at just 560kg, this ultra-lightweight caravan draws inspiration from the American teardrop trailer but with a distinctly eco-friendly twist. Designed for minimal fuss, it features an indoor-outdoor kitchen and a transformable interior that can comfortably accommodate two people.
This clever caravan will definitely appeal to South Africans who dream of sustainable travel without compromising on adventure. While it’s not yet available in sunny SA, the collaboration signals a future where outdoor exploration is seamlessly integrated with eco-conscious travel. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway in the Western Cape or a long road trip into the hinterland of the Great Karoo, the electric mini-caravan is an exciting glimpse into how mobility could evolve.
Next up, Renault has partnered with Aura Aero, a start-up based in Toulouse, to present an all-electric aircraft that is truly redefining air travel. The Integral E is a two-seater electric plane with a flight time of one hour and an impressive recharge time of just 30 minutes. This innovative project highlights Renault’s commitment to sustainable travel across all terrains, even the skies.

This collaboration underscores the growing movement towards reducing the carbon footprint of transportation, which could have global implications for countries like South Africa, where long-haul flights are a regular part of both business and leisure travel.
For those seeking a more nimble, eco-friendly option for city commuting, Renault’s collaboration with Ateliers HeritageBike is bound to impress. This start-up, based in Annecy, has designed an electric motorbike that combines retro styling with cutting-edge technology. The Heritage Spirit Scrambler offers a 110 km range and is powered by a 7 kW motor, making it an ideal solution for short-distance urban travel.
In bustling South African cities like Durban and Johannesburg, where traffic congestion is a daily challenge, an electric motorbike could be the perfect solution for reducing emissions and easing commute times. The stylish and rugged design of the Heritage Spirit Scrambler brings a touch of French flair to the electric bike market, offering a fun, sustainable way to zip around town.
Lastly, Renault has teamed up with Searider, a start-up from the Alpes-Maritimes region, to introduce an electric water bike that offers a fresh approach to sustainable transportation on water. The Seacruiser is designed to travel at speeds of up to 55 km/h, is powered by two 22 kW electric motors, and boasts a runtime of 90 minutes. It’s the perfect balance of sport and leisure, making it a thrilling way to explore lakes, rivers, and coastal waters.
While South Africa is already well-known for its beautiful coastlines and abundant water activities, the idea of an electric water bike could offer a sustainable alternative for outdoor enthusiasts looking to reduce their environmental impact. Imagine cruising the waters off the Camps Bay coastline or enjoying the tranquillity of the Knysna Lagoon on a Seacruiser—all with zero emissions.
Renault’s 4 Movements initiative is a bold statement about the future of transportation. With their Renault 4 E-Tech electric vehicle leading the way, these collaborations explore how sustainable mobility can extend beyond the roads and into the air, water, and beyond. While some of these innovations may not yet be available in South Africa, they signal a global shift toward cleaner, more versatile modes of transport.

Taking vintage car designs and adding modern aesthetics and tech may not be revolutionary in itself, but when done right, the results are truly remarkable. French designer Ora Ïto, teaming up with Renault, has achieved just that with the R17 ElectroMod, a stunning electric concept that pays homage to the iconic 1970s R17 sports coupé.
The R17 ElectroMod is the fourth collaboration in Renault’s series of heritage-inspired projects, following successful reinterpretations of the Renault 4 and Renault 5. It stands out for its futuristic design and enhanced performance, thanks to a carbon-fibre chassis and a fully electric powertrain. Debuting at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, the R17 ElectroMod impressed with its seamless blend of retro aesthetics and modern technology, showcasing Renault’s commitment to innovation while honouring its iconic past.
The two-door coupé, launched in 1971 and produced until 1979, epitomises the idealistic spirit of the 1970s.
Ora Ïto’s restomod honours its avant-garde roots while incorporating modern electric technology. His ‘simplexity’ philosophy streamlines the design to create a sleek and modern look without compromising its sense of nostalgia.
The Renault R17 electric restomod preserves key elements of the original, including the cabin structure, frameless doors, and signature angular lines. Here are some key highlights to know:
The coupe’s body is coated in Galactic Brown, a perfect homage to the ‘70s classic. The original four circular headlights have been replaced with sleek, thin LEDs featuring a subtle yellow tint. Ora Ïto’s vision of “simplexity” — the art of simplifying complex forms is depicted in the R17 ElectroMod. His design maintains the sharp, confident lines of the original ’70s model, but with updates that reflect today’s design and engineering trends. For example, the frameless doors and squared-off body shape are true to the past, while the ultra-modern touches, like the sleek LED light strip spanning the rear, bring the R17 squarely into the future.
Like the exterior, the interior of the R17 stays true to 1970s-inspired themes. A two-spoke steering wheel with a flat top and bottom, wrapped in fabric, immediately catches the eye. Wooden trim lines the dashboard, while, like the original Renault 17, four prominent gauges sit in front of the driver. The key update is that these gauges are now square-shaped digital displays, each with a small screen and red graphics. A larger screen serves as the infotainment display. The seats are upholstered in a blend of brown leather and Merino and bouclé wool white fabric, adding a touch of sophistication.
As for performance, this retro-inspired concept is equipped with a rear-mounted all-electric powertrain, delivering 201kW of power.
Renault Won’t Turn the Stunning R17 Concept into a Production Model
This car will remain a one-off, another incredibly cool EV restomod that you can’t buy, as Renault currently has no plans to bring it to market. While we won’t be seeing this beauty on the road anytime soon, Group1 Renault offers a fantastic range of vehicles that are ready to drive. Book a test drive today to explore our selection, and discover your next ride!

At the recent 2024 IAA Transportation Show in Hanover, Renault stole the spotlight with the official reveal of their latest concept vehicle, the Renault Estafette. This all-electric van is a quirky yet throwback-futuristic take on urban delivery vehicles. Although it’s not available for purchase, the Estafette offers a fascinating glimpse into Renault’s vision for sustainable city logistics, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.
The original Renault Estafette, launched in 1959, was a pioneer in its own right. It was one of the first front-wheel-drive vans, and its practical design, coupled with an economical engine, made it a favourite for business pursuits. Now, almost 65 years later, Renault has reimagined the Estafette for a new era. While it evokes some nostalgia, this concept van is firmly focused on the future.
Standing tall at 2.59 meters with an overall length of 4.87 meters, the Estafette’s size is comparable to Renault’s Trafic, yet it offers a taller load space, making it ideal for urban deliveries. Despite its size, it boasts an impressive 10-meter turning circle – similar to that of a Renault Clio, ensuring manoeuvrability in tight city spaces.
The Renault Estafette concept doesn’t just stop at practicality – it’s designed to turn heads. The body is streamlined with a sleek, modern aesthetic that defies the typical “boxy” van shape. While the primary colour is a muted grey, the lemon-yellow roof adds a playful pop of colour, hinting at the brand’s fun, retro personality.
The rear of the van features a roller shutter door that opens vertically to maximize the loading height. This thoughtful design element makes it easier for delivery drivers to access cargo in cramped urban environments without worrying about swing-out doors.
In short, Renault’s design philosophy of “humanisation,” introduced with their electric Renault 5, is evident in every curve of the van, aiming to make utility vehicles more relatable and friendly.
Step inside the Estafette, and you’re greeted with a zesty yellow cockpit that’s as innovative as it is vibrant. Designed with driver comfort in mind, the cockpit allows for standing room, thanks to its generous roof height. The driver’s seat swivels for flexibility, and a fold-up training seat is included for those learning the ropes of urban delivery.
What sets the Estafette apart, however, is its dashboard – equipped with not one, but four screens. A 7-inch screen displays key driving information, while a 12-inch central screen handles apps tailored for the vehicle’s commercial users. There are also two 10-inch vertical screens providing real-time rearview footage, thanks to the external cameras.
Renault has also gone above and beyond by introducing a 3D feel to the interior, with surfaces patterned in small squares, making the cabin both visually engaging and tactile.
While the Estafette is a showpiece of Renault’s creative and design capabilities, it’s more than just eye candy. This van is the first vehicle built on Renault’s FlexEVan platform, representing a groundbreaking shift towards Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs). This means the van’s software can receive updates and upgrades throughout its lifecycle, ensuring it stays up-to-date with the latest technological advancements.
The FlexEVan platform is a collaboration between Renault, the Volvo Group, and logistics company CMA CGM, and it’s designed with the future in mind. As cities move towards greener logistics solutions, the Estafette concept embodies the vision of compact, connected, and sustainable delivery vehicles.
Philippe Divry, CEO of Flexis SAS, summed it up perfectly: “The Estafette Concept is the first example of what electric utility vehicles will look like tomorrow: purpose-engineered to drive in cities, compact, connected, and built for fully sustainable delivery services.”
While you won’t find the Renault Estafette on the showroom floor just yet, its debut signals exciting developments in the world of electric and connected vehicles. Renault continues to push the boundaries of innovation, blending sustainability with practicality, and making sure they remain at the forefront of urban logistics.
At Group1 Renault, we’re thrilled to witness these bold steps forward, and we’re here to keep you informed every step of the way. The 2022 ChangeNOW summit is the biggest event in the world dedicated to sustainable and positive impact solutions. Renault will be part of it with plans to unveil its new hydrogen concept car on May 19th, 2022. The new hydrogen concept car is the latest from Renault following a busy couple of years with the impressive Renault Morphoz, all-electric Renault 5 hatchback and the AIR4 flying drone. With such interesting developments in sustainability and Renault’s concept car of the future making a World Premiere, the ChangeNOW 2022 is certainly an exciting prospect for all automotive fans.
Following an earlier teaser image showing a fairly slim headlight line and front grille, a substantially lower front bumper, accentuated by tall daytime running lights, new images have appeared from CEO Luca de Meo.
While the new hydrogen concept car was confirmed at Renault’s 2021 financial year-end, the latest images reveal a little more of the front end with a new Renault badge illuminated on the side window. Judging from the available photos and renderings, the hydrogen concept car will be taller than the new electric Renault Megane and could most feature a full-blown SUV profile.
In February 2022, De Meo said: “We will soon launch a concept car. We wanted to materialise our vision of sustainability, based on the three pillars – safety, inclusion and environment – on one product. This concept will announce a future product. When we do concepts at Renault, we want to turn them into real cars.”
It appears that Renault is putting more effort into building a more efficient hydrogen-powered car. According to the French automaker, the new unique hydrogen concept car will “embody the group’s sustainable development vision and commitments”.
Considering Renault is a historic mobility brand and pioneer of electric vehicles in Europe, especially, the automaker is leading the charge in developing more innovative, sustainable vehicles. As part of the ‘Renaulution’ strategic plan, The Renault brand has launched an ambitious, value-generating evolution towards a more competitive, balanced, and electric range. The goal of the company is to provide cutting-edge technology and innovation in transportation, energy, and mobility services.
The ChangeNOW story started in 2015 on the back of France hosting COP21 and following the signing of the Paris agreement. At the time, many sustainability solutions were emerging as entrepreneurs from around the world were working on ways to address some of the world’s major global issues. Most of these initiatives remained isolated and unknown with little chance of scalability.
Unlike more mature sectors, the impact sector did not have a global gathering of sorts. With that, the idea behind the ChangeNOW summit materialised as the impact ecosystem needed a major global event. The objective was to unite investors, entrepreneurs, corporates, communities and talent across the industry to accelerate sustainable development and ensure visibility at scale.
The 2022 ChangeNOW event will take place between 19 and 21 May at the Grand Palais Ephémère and the Eiffel Tower. Renault will reveal its new sustainability-driven hydrogen concept car at 8:00 am (CET) on the 19th of May.
