JAC Motors is turning heads with its flagship offering – the T9 double cab range. After a series of delays, the JAC T9 Hunter finally arrived in South Africa with more than a simple point to prove.
We take a look at the Hunter’s style, substance and reasons that this JAC is silencing the critics.
The JAC T9 Hunter, which made its world premiere at the 2023 Shanghai International Auto Show, arrived in local showrooms late last year as the premier model in JAC’s T-Series lineup.
This bakkie is positioned above the older T8 and workhorse T6 and X200 ranges, signalling JAC’s ambition to compete with well-known brands in the market.
Karl-Heinz Göbel, CEO of JAC Motors SA, calls the T9 a “game-changer” for the brand. It’s designed to take on established competitors such as the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Volkswagen Amarok, and Mitsubishi Triton in terms of technology and comfort. The T9 also competes against other Chinese offerings like the GWM P-Series and LDV T60, which similarly offer high specification levels at competitive prices.
The T9 range comprises four models, including 4×4 and 4×2 derivatives, all powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. This powertrain delivers 125kW and 410Nm, providing great performance and good driveability with minimal lag.
In terms of off-road capabilities, the T9 Hunter has a 210mm ground clearance and 800mm wading depth, which is impressive. The 4×4 models feature a part-time four-wheel-drive system with low range and a rear diff-lock for enhanced off-road performance.
Inside, the T9 offers a premium feel with a spacious cabin that comfortably accommodates adults.
The top-of-the-range 2.0CTi Double Cab 4×4 Super Lux comes loaded with features typically found in more expensive rivals. These include a 360-degree parking camera, sunroof, leather upholstery, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, and dual-zone climate control.
Safety features are comprehensive, with six airbags, stability control, hill-hold assist, ABS brakes, and tyre pressure monitoring standards on both Lux and Super Lux models.
With the T9 Hunter, JAC is not only aiming to boost its sales but also to change perceptions about Chinese vehicles in the South African market. The brand’s growth to over 70 JAC dealerships in Southern Africa and its goal to sell 3,000 JAC bakkies and trucks in South Africa this year underscores its commitment to the market.

JAC Motors recently marked some significant milestones, celebrating both its 60th anniversary and the production of its 300,000th T-Series double-cab bakkie. This achievement highlights a remarkable acceleration in the company’s manufacturing capabilities and market reach globally.
Astonishingly the initial 200,000 T-Series bakkies took 13 years to produce, while the final 100,000 units were produced in just two years – less than a sixth of the time it took to produce the first 200,000.
This dramatic increase in production speed is a testament to JAC Motors’ effective growth strategy and the rising global appetite for their vehicles.
JAC Motors began its journey in 1964 as a small automobile factory in Hefei, China. Today, it has transformed into a major player in the global automotive industry, exporting vehicles to over 132 countries worldwide. Among these markets, South Africa stands out as a crucial hub for these vehicles.
JAC Motors holds the second position in China’s domestic pickup industry. In 2023, the company sold 55,000 pickups, with 42,000 units exported. The brand experienced significant growth, with international sales up 9.9% year-on-year and domestic sales increasing by 16.3%, resulting in an overall 11.3% sales boost.
At the heart of JAC’s success is its popular T-Series bakkie range. The current lineup includes the T6, T8, and T9 models, all available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations. This variety allows JAC to cater to a wide range of customer needs and preferences, from everyday drivers to those requiring more robust off-road capabilities.
At the 2024 Beijing Automotive Show, JAC Motors unveiled an electric version of the T9, boasting a 500km range. The T9 EV features an 88.02 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and two electric motors delivering 176 Nm and 342 Nm of torque, respectively.
Looking to the future, JAC Motors has ambitious plans to expand its offerings. By late 2024, the company intends to introduce T6 single-cab models, targeting the workhorse market segment. This move will be followed in early 2025 by the launch of T8 models equipped with 8-speed automatic transmissions.
These expansions demonstrate JAC’s commitment to innovation and its responsiveness to diverse market demands. By continuously evolving its product line, JAC Motors is positioning itself to maintain its competitive edge and further strengthen its presence in the global automotive landscape.

Excellent news, bakkie enthusiasts! The all-new JAC T8 models have just made their grand entrance in sunny South Africa, and here at Group1 JAC, we couldn’t be more excited to introduce you to these dynamic pickups. Designed for both urban commutes and off-road escapades, the new iterations of the T8 strike the perfect balance between style, functionality, and value.
The JAC T8 lineup now features two new models, enhancing an already impressive range. Positioned between the entry-level T6 and the robust T9, the T8 offers exceptional value with the 2.0L CTi Lux variants.
With a 4×2 model priced at R399,900 and a 4×4 model at R449,900, these bakkies are among the most competitively priced in their segment. The 4×2 model, in particular, stands out as one of the best deals on the market, outpacing rivals like the Mahindra Pik Up double cab S6 Karoo and the GM Steed 5 2.0 VGT SX in terms of affordability.
Step into the T8, and you’re greeted with a blend of comfort and practicality. The exterior boasts Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, stylish fog lamps, and running boards that enhance both aesthetics and utility. The 4×4 model ups the ante with a black off-road style bar, rear step bumper, and side steps, all sitting pretty on two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the T8 is a sanctuary of ease, bolstered by user-friendly technology. Leather seats, a nine-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and a suite of advanced safety features including airbags, electronic stability control, and hill-start control, ensure every journey is a pleasure.
Add the convenience of a reverse camera, rear park distance sensors, and cruise control, and you’ve got a vehicle that’s ready for anything life throws at you.
Under the hood, the T8 doesn’t disappoint either. A 2.0L turbo-diesel engine churns out 104kW of power and 320Nm of torque, offering robust performance whether you’re navigating city streets or tackling off-road trails.
Paired with a six-speed manual transmission, the T8 delivers an average fuel consumption of 7.8L/100km, giving you a range of about 1,000km from its 76-litre tank. This makes it not only powerful but also efficient, perfect for long drives and adventures off the beaten path.
Safety is paramount in the T8. It comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features that provide peace of mind on every drive. ABS, a tyre pressure monitor, and electronic stability control are just the beginning. The T8 also includes hill-start control, ensuring you can handle steep inclines with ease, and dual airbags to protect you and your passengers.
One of the standout features of the T8 is its incredible value. The pricing strategy aims to deliver maximum bang for your buck. With retail prices starting just under R400,000, these models offer features and capabilities often found in more expensive bakkies.
This is complemented by a five-year/100,000km warranty and a five-year/100,000km service plan, making the T8 not just a purchase, but a long-term investment in reliability and performance.
The T8 models are the latest testament to JAC’s commitment to innovation, quality, and value. Each vehicle is crafted to meet the diverse needs of South African drivers, from the bustling streets of Johannesburg to the wild terrains of the Karoo.
