Here’s Why the Scorpio-N is the Real Mzansi Deal
There’s a lot of buzz around the proverbial watercooler about the new Mahindra Scorpio-N, and it’s very easy to see why. This is no longer the basic workhorse some may remember from the early 2000s. It’s bigger, bolder, and better looking; ready to take on your family road trips, weekday commutes, and weekend 4×4 adventures with equal confidence.
Whether you’re new to the Mahindra name or you’ve followed its steady rise in South Africa over the years, the Scorpio-N proves that this is a brand hitting its stride. And if you’re shopping for a body-on-frame SUV that can handle tough terrain without giving up comfort or tech, you’ll want to take a closer look.
Back when Mahindra first entered the local market, it was all about rugged reliability. The original Scorpio was sturdy but simple, something better suited to farm roads than Sandton streets. Fast-forward to today, and the Scorpio-N is a completely reimagined SUV, engineered with family comfort and real-world performance in mind.
It’s a big deal, literally and figuratively. With dimensions that rival large SUVs like the Fortuner, the Scorpio-N stands tall with three rows of seating, a confident on-road presence, and a surprisingly refined ride

Under the bonnet, every model in the range is powered by a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder mHawk turbodiesel engine, pushing out 129 kW and 400 Nm of torque. Whether you choose the rear-wheel-drive models or the range-topping 4Xplor Adventure with its low-range gearbox and locking diff, you’ll get a capable performer that’s been engineered for South African roads, whether they are tarred or not.
Here’s the standout detail. The Scorpio-N is built on a ladder-frame chassis, which matters for drivers who take their adventures seriously. Yet it still manages to offer a smooth, surprisingly quiet ride around town thanks to well-calibrated suspension and a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts with unexpected finesse.
The Scorpio-N was clearly built with families in mind. Climb inside, and you’ll find a spacious, comfortable interior with electric seat adjustment, durable leatherette upholstery, and proper rear AC vents to keep everyone cool in summer.
Up front, there’s an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and even wireless charging. Higher trims add a Sony sound system that’s better than expected, and smart features like cruise control, keyless entry, and push-start bring everyday convenience into the mix.
Safety is covered, too. Six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, stability control, ABS with EBD, and a five-star Global NCAP rating (a first for a ladder-frame SUV) offer peace of mind on every trip.
While many SUVs today lean more towards styling than substance, the Scorpio-N doesn’t mess around. The Z8 4Xplor Adventure spec is a genuine 4×4 with all the proper gear – low-range, mechanical locking diff, and enough clearance to take on serious trails.
Whether you’re hauling kids to school or heading for the Cederberg, this is a vehicle that takes the rough with the smooth. The fuel consumption isn’t bad either. Real-world tests have shown averages between 6 to 7.5 L/100 km on long trips, even with a full load.
FUN FACT! Did you know that South Africa is home to some of the most scenic driving routes in the world? From the dramatic bends of Chapman’s Peak Drive to the gravel tracks of the Swartberg Pass, this country was built for bakkies and bold SUVs. In fact, many international film crews choose South Africa for car commercials and adventure scenes thanks to our jaw-dropping backdrops and varied terrain.
With pricing that starts around R477,199 for the entry-level model and tops out at R644,499 for the 4Xplor Adventure, the Scorpio-N offers serious value for South African buyers who want capability, space, and peace of mind. Plus, a five-year or 150,000 km warranty and a five-year or 100,000 km service plan are included.
It’s no surprise this SUV made it into the running for South African Car of the Year; it’s a standout for all the right reasons. The Mahindra Scorpio-N feels like a coming-of-age moment for the brand in South Africa. It’s well-specced, capable, comfortable, and unafraid of a gravel road. If you’re in the market for a big family SUV that’s as at home in Mzansi’s bushveld as it is on city streets, this one deserves a test drive.

Mahindra 20 Years In SA And Climbing The Ranks
The Mahindra Group has had an extremely successful few years on the back of a slew of strong product launches across the globe. What was once a company facing an uncertain future in the 1990s is now a dominant force in the automotive industry. The Indian automaker
has defied the odds, carving out a niche with rugged, value-driven vehicles that resonate with customers worldwide.
Fast forward to February 2025, and Mahindra has achieved a historic milestone as India’s second-largest automaker by sales, overtaking Hyundai with an impressive 19% year-over-year growth. On the global stage, Mahindra now stands as the 11th largest automaker by market capitalization, reaching a USD 43.12 billion valuation as reported by the social media platform World of Statistics.
Granted, this success didn’t come easily. Mahindra had to fight for its place in the automotive world. In the 1990s, the company was at a crossroads, faced with stiff competition and lagging behind in modern vehicle engineering. It had to either innovate or risk fading into irrelevance. By 1996, Mahindra’s market position was precarious, and drastic action was needed.
Instead of buckling under pressure, Mahindra formed strategic partnerships with global automotive leaders like Ford, Renault, Pininfarina and Volkswagen, invested heavily in research and development, and reinvented its product lineup. Key pillars of its growth include:
Mahindra’s journey in South Africa began in 2004 with the rugged Mahindra Bolero, a vehicle that quickly gained a reputation for durability and practicality. Shortly after, Mahindra introduced the Scorpio in 2005, bringing a bold and capable SUV to local roads. Not long after, the Pik Up arrived in 2007, cementing Mahindra’s presence in the bakkie segment with its reliable workhorse appeal.
By 2011, the company expanded further into the SUV market with the launch of the XUV500, a model that proved Mahindra could compete in the premium space. This was followed by the compact KUV100 in 2015, appealing to city drivers who wanted a more affordable yet capable crossover. Mahindra’s lineup has continued to evolve, with notable models like the Scorpio-N, record-breaking XUV700, and the Karoo Pik-Up, all of which helped the brand secure recognition as South Africa’s fastest-growing automotive company. More recently, Mahindra has refreshed its compact SUV offering with the introduction of the XUV 3XO, a refined successor to the XUV300.
Beyond expanding its model range, Mahindra has reinforced its long-term commitment to South Africa by investing in local operations. The company’s first assembly facility (Semi Knocked Down facility), established in Durban in 2018, has already produced over 25,000 vehicles. With 27% annual sales growth and a network of 95 dealerships nationwide, Mahindra continues to make impressive strides in the South African market, blending affordability, reliability, and innovation to win over businesses and everyday drivers.
Building on this momentum, Mahindra is now exploring the feasibility of setting up a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) plant in South Africa. This means vehicles could be assembled locally rather than being fully imported. While still under evaluation, this move could bring significant investment to South Africa’s automotive sector, create jobs, and open new opportunities for the local automotive supply industry.
With Mahindra’s trajectory pointing firmly upward, there’s never been a more exciting time to watch its progress. For the latest updates on Mahindra’s developments in South Africa, be sure to follow the Group1 Mahindra blog and stay ahead of the news.

Mahindra SA and IDC sign MoU to assess feasibility of CKD assembly in South Africa
Exciting news, Mahindra fans! The South African automotive industry has long been a key player on the continent, with global manufacturers setting up production facilities to tap into local talent and favourable trade agreements. Now, Mahindra has hinted at taking its commitment to the country even further.
Could we soon see Mahindra vehicles rolling off a fully-fledged South African assembly line? Here’s what we know so far.
Mahindra has been steadily growing its footprint in South Africa, and recent developments suggest the brand is exploring deeper integration into the local automotive industry.
At a press conference held at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Mahindra announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). While this does not confirm a new production facility just yet, it sets the stage for a feasibility study into the possibility of establishing a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) assembly plant.
For context, Mahindra already assembles Semi Knocked Down (SKD) vehicles in Durban, where it recently celebrated the production of its 25,000th locally assembled Pik-Up. The MoU signals Mahindra’s intent to explore the expansion of its production capabilities, which could mean a major shift in the company’s operations in the country.
A move from SKD to CKD production would be a game changer. Unlike SKD assembly, which involves putting together pre-assembled vehicle kits, CKD manufacturing is a much more comprehensive process. It requires a full production line, including body stamping, welding, and painting. This shift would mean significant investment in infrastructure, skills development, and job creation.
South Africa’s Automotive Master Plan (SAAM) 2035 aims to enhance the country’s competitiveness as a global automotive manufacturing hub. A Mahindra CKD facility would align with these objectives, potentially boosting exports, strengthening the supply chain, and supporting the local economy.
According to Rian Coetzee, Acting Divisional Executive for Industry Planning and Project Development at the IDC, Mahindra’s feasibility study aligns well with SAAM 2035’s objectives. If Mahindra decides to move ahead with the CKD plant, it could be a strategic win for both the brand and the country’s automotive sector.
An exciting aspect of the feasibility study is its inclusion of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs). The global auto industry is shifting towards electric mobility, and South Africa is working to introduce incentives for EV production. If Mahindra were to manufacture NEVs locally, it could put the country on the map as a serious player in the electric vehicle space.
While no specific models have been confirmed for local assembly, industry speculation suggests that Mahindra could use South Africa as a hub for producing the next-generation Global Pik-Up or even certain electric models. This move could not only help Mahindra cater to growing demand but also position South Africa as a competitive export base for emerging markets.
Despite the buzz, Mahindra has made it clear that the CKD facility is still in the evaluation phase. The feasibility study will examine logistics, supply chain capabilities, workforce development, and market conditions before any concrete decision is made.
Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, has reinforced the company’s long-term commitment to the country. He believes this study will provide valuable insights into Mahindra’s potential for deeper integration into the local automotive landscape while also supporting South Africa’s industrial growth goals.
For now, South African Mahindra fans will have to wait and see what the study reveals. One thing is certain – Mahindra’s growing presence in the country is a strong sign of confidence in South Africa’s automotive industry.
Whether or not Mahindra vehicles will soon be built on SA soil remains to be seen, but the possibility is an exciting one. Keep an eye on the Group1 Mahindra blog for the latest updates on this and other Mahindra developments. As the local automotive industry evolves, we’ll be here to bring you all the news, insights, and exciting announcements as they unfold.

Mahindra SOAR Programme: Empowering Women To Work
The Mahindra Group has launched the innovative SOAR (Seamless Opportunity for Amazing Returnships) programme in India – a bold step towards championing workplace inclusivity. This exciting initiative is aimed at women returning to the workforce after taking a career break.
Unlike traditional returnship programmes, which often offer temporary or contract-based roles, SOAR offers full-time, permanent positions tailored to participants’ previous experience.
For women who’ve had a break, ranging from six months to three years, this is an incredible opportunity to re-enter the workforce and rebuild their careers.
We list the key features of this initiative and how it will benefit women.
Mahindra’s SOAR programme is designed to offer women the support, flexibility, and opportunity to flourish in their careers. Here’s a closer look at what makes it stand out:
SOAR offers full-time positions that align with participants’ previous professional experience. This means they are not starting from scratch. Unlike other programmes that offer only part-time or temporary roles, SOAR ensures stability and long-term growth.
One of the standout features of SOAR is the mentorship framework. Each participant is paired with a senior mentor to provide unbiased advice.
Women are assigned a “buddy” (a fellow female colleague) to offer support and guidance for the initial six months. With ongoing feedback and upskilling opportunities, women regain their confidence and stay ahead of industry trends.
Understanding the diverse needs of women returning to work, SOAR offers flexible working options, including part-time or job-sharing roles. These arrangements make it easier to transition back into professional life without sacrificing work-life balance.
SOAR provides a comprehensive induction at the Mahindra Leadership University (MLU) to ensure that participants are fully prepared for their roles. Participants also benefit from being part of a cohort, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared learning. Regular check-ins with managers and HR ensure the programme remains engaging and productive throughout.
SOAR is backed by strong governance to ensure the programme’s success. Participants undergo regular performance reviews, and feedback is gathered at key stages to ensure continuous improvement. This attention to detail ensures that women are supported every step of the way and set up for long-term success within Mahindra Group.
SOAR is designed for women with at least five years of professional experience prior to their career break, which should range from six months to three years. This broad eligibility allows Mahindra to tap into a diverse talent pool, welcoming women from various sectors and backgrounds to contribute their expertise.
The SOAR programme doesn’t just provide a job – it offers a seamless and supportive transition back into the workforce. It is more than just a returnship programme – it’s a statement of Mahindra Group’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
Unlike many other programmes, SOAR ensures that participants receive the support they need to succeed long-term, feeling valued and integrated within the Mahindra culture.

With its latest electric SUV models — the BE 6 and XUV 9e — Mahindra is making a bold statement in the global EV space, offering insights into what the future may hold for South Africa’s automotive industry.
Mahindra’s name is becoming synonymous with innovation in electric mobility. With vehicles like the BE 6, which boasts a remarkable range of up to 682km and a powerful 79kWh battery, the brand is setting new industry benchmarks.

These advancements highlight the growing importance of EV infrastructure, which remains a work in progress in South Africa. By studying Mahindra’s strategies and technological breakthroughs, local stakeholders can identify gaps and opportunities to accelerate the development of a robust charging network.
Mahindra’s focus on creating vehicles tailored for a variety of markets — spanning both Tier 1 cities and emerging urban centres in India — provides a blueprint for how South Africa can adapt to its unique regional requirements.
South Africa may not yet be a dominant force in the global EV landscape, but Mahindra’s bold moves could catalyse change. The company’s competitive pricing and strategic positioning could attract local partnerships or inspire similar innovations in the South African market.
As South African consumers become more aware of international EV offerings, expectations for range, performance, and affordability will rise. Mahindra Marazzo wishlist
The MUV segment in SA is witnessing immense growth due to the need for spacious vehicles that can carry large families. Landing a well-deserved spot on our wishlist is the Mahindra Marrazzo, a powerful compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) manufactured by Mahindra & Mahindra since 2018. This versatile and feature-packed MPV has captured our hearts and imagination, and though it’s currently not available in South Africa, we can’t help but dream about the impact it could make in our market.
Let’s dig deeper into what makes the Marazzo so special and why it’s a dream addition for any large family, travel enthusiast, taxi/fleet operator, or corporate client.
The Mahindra Marazzo’s design is unlike anything else in the Mahindra lineup. Drawing inspiration from the streamlined shape of a shark, it boasts a sleek yet muscular exterior. Its bold grille, aerodynamic lines, and standout tail lamps create a vehicle that’s both functional and stylish.
With a seating capacity of up to eight passengers, it’s designed for families and those who need ample room for everyone (class-leading shoulder room in the first two rows and generous legroom in the third row). A wishlist-worthy vehicle has to deliver on tech, and the Marazzo doesn’t disappoint. Equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it keeps modern drivers connected and passengers entertained. Automatic climate control, a signature roof-mounted air conditioning system, rear AC vents, and a premium sound system are also available.
Under the hood, the Mahindra Marazzo is powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. This engine delivers 90kW of power and 300 Nm of torque. One of its most notable features is its exceptional fuel efficiency. With Mahindra reporting a consumption rate of approximately 5.8 l/100 km, the Marazzo is a cost-effective choice for frequent road users.
The Mahindra Marazzo prioritises safety, offering a range of features designed to protect passengers and provide a secure driving experience. Key safety elements include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, and a high-strength steel body for greater impact resistance.
For added convenience and control, higher variants of the Marazzo come equipped with advanced driver assistance systems, giving drivers extra confidence and peace of mind on the road.
The family-friendly 8-seater has earned praise for its spacious interiors, comfortable ride, and unparalleled reliability. As a Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) with a touch of SUV ruggedness, the Marazzo would stand out in the competitive segment, taking on models like the Tata Safari and Maruti Suzuki XL6. If introduced locally, it would cater to consumers looking for a spacious MPV without the premium price tag, carving out a niche as an affordable yet feature-packed MPV.

Safety is a priority with the Thar Roxx, which is expected to come equipped with a top-tier selection of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). As with those that already known and loved in the Mahindra XUV700 and XUV 3XO, these systems are aimed at aiding driver awareness and control, to provide peace of mind on every journey.
DID YOU KNOW? In South Africa, road safety continues to be a significant concern. Recent data reveals that South Africa has one of the highest rates of road fatalities worldwide, with 34.9 deaths per 100,000 males and 9.9 per 100,000 females, according to a report by an overseas insurance company. Human factors, such as reckless driving and fatigue, contributed to 80.8% of these accidents, underscoring the critical need for enhanced road safety measures.
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) offer promising solutions to mitigate these risks. These systems, which include features like lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking, can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents. For instance, studies show that ADAS can reduce collision rates by up to 27% by alerting drivers to potential hazards and even intervening when necessary.
At Group1 Mahindra, we’re as eager as you are to eventually see the Thar Roxx hit South African shores. Its addition will further strengthen Mahindra’s SUV portfolio, joining popular models like the Bolero, Scorpio-N, and Pik-Up single cab and double cab. The new Mahindra XUV700 SUV scored the highest safety rating from G-NCAP
The big luxury Mahindra XUV700 SUV is so nearly in South Africa – you can already pre-order it, and many are doing so. If you’re not – you’ll miss out.
It was crowned Indian Car of the Year 2022, and critics around the world have given it rave reviews for being a great drive, a beautiful car, full of luxury features, and also very safe to travel in.
Apart from passing the crash tests with flying colours, you simply have to look at the impressive list of safety features on offer.
There are three trim levels, but let’s look at the top range Mahindra XUV700 AX7 L, which gives you:
The most up-to-date electronic stability program and advanced driver assistance (ADAS), which include front collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, driver drowsiness warning, lane departure warning, and smart pilot assist.
It can recognise traffic signs, and monitor your blind spots, all while continuously recording a digital video of your trip. And you get seven airbags in this model as well.
You can see from this that while the XUV700 has passed the most stringent crash safety tests, much of its technology was designed to help you avoid an accident in the first place.
This approach ties in with G-NCAP and campaigns such as #SaferCarsForIndia and #SaferCarsForAfrica.
The Global New Car Assessment Programme is like the other NCAP programmes, but with a bias to developing nations. It uses the United Nations automotive safety guidelines as its minimum standards, aiming very high for zero road deaths among passengers and pedestrians. This goal is probably not attainable, but it helps focus G-NCAP on how it goes about things.
Its #Safercars programmes focus on India and Africa, both one billion plus population centres with troubling car-related death statistics.
As a driver in South Africa, you will be well aware that you cannot always control road safety around you. This is why driving a car with an impeccable safety pedigree will go a long way to giving you peace of mind.
And if such a car comes with luxury at a great price, it will be well worth it to have a look at the Mahindra XUV700 before you decide what to buy.
