For more than 70 years the legendary vehicle brand that is the Mahindra has been synonymous with legendary adventures across the globe. Recently, the Mahindra fleet — including the Scorpio-N, XUV700, and Thar, embarked on an unforgettable journey from Manali to Leh. This was a test of endurance, skill, and the raw capability of Mahindra’s finest SUVs as they tackled one of the most challenging routes in the world.
Manali to Leh is a drive that many dream of, with its mix of scenic beauty and demanding terrain. Starting in Manali, a popular gateway to the Himalayas, the route climbs through some of India’s highest mountain passes. The convoy of 14 Mahindras began its journey, snaking through the winding roads of Himachal Pradesh, heading towards Shinku La. This no-ordinary route featured both popular landmarks and hidden gems, offering a unique blend of the Himalayas’ awe-inspiring beauty, from pristine lakes and majestic glaciers to untouched valleys.
Tips For Planning Your Long Distance Adventure:
South Africa is just as adventurous, offering breathtaking landscapes and diverse experiences perfect for long-distance journeys. The ideal time to schedule a trip is between December and March, during the summer months when the weather is favourable and the mountain passes are clear. Make sure to arrange permits, book accommodations, and stock up on supplies in advance to ensure a smooth and hassle-free adventure.
The first leg of the journey put the Mahindra SUVs to the test with steep, slippery hairpin turns that challenged even the most experienced drivers. However, the ScorpioN and Thar, equipped with their rugged ladder frames and 4×4 capabilities, easily handled the rough terrain. The XUV700, despite being a monocoque SUV, kept pace with its all-wheel-drive system, demonstrating a remarkable balance between off-road toughness and on-road comfort.
Crossing Pensi La at 14,400 feet was a highlight, with the Mahindra SUVs navigating their way through the challenging terrain to reach this secluded pass. The drive offered stunning views of the Drang-Drung glacier, one of the largest in Ladakh. Here, the freshly laid tarmac allowed the Mahindras to showcase their versatility, transforming from rugged off-roaders to smooth cruisers as they effortlessly navigated the twisty roads.
The journey then led to Zanskar Valley, an area known for its towering peaks and unforgiving terrain. The Scorpio N and Thar proved their mettle, tackling the rough conditions with confidence, while the XUV700 continued to impress with its adaptability and ruggedness. This part of Ladakh is particularly famous for its remoteness and the sense of isolation it offers, making it a true test for both man and machine.
Nubra Valley, another key destination, required the convoy to navigate through Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world. Despite the narrow roads and traffic congestion, the Mahindra SUVs handled the conditions with ease. An alternative route via Wari La offered an equally scenic and less crowded path, allowing the convoy to experience the raw beauty of Ladakh.
Pangong Tso, the world’s highest saltwater lake, was the next major stop. The crystal-clear waters and dramatic landscape provided a serene backdrop before the final challenge: Umling La, the world’s highest motorable road at 19,024 feet. Known for its steep hairpins and lack of oxygen, this route tested the vehicles to their limits. However, the Mahindras proved their capability, overcoming the devilishly tough conditions with ease.
The journey concluded with a descent into Hanle, home to one of the world’s highest astronomical observatories, and Demchok, a remote village near the China border. The smooth roads and well-marked tarmac provided a welcome contrast to the rugged terrain encountered earlier.
The Manali to Leh adventure reaffirmed the exceptional performance and reliability of Mahindra SUVs. Whether facing challenging off-road conditions or cruising on smooth tarmac, these vehicles demonstrated their ability to handle some of the world’s most demanding environments with ease, making them the perfect companions for any adventure.

As Mahindra marks two decades of rugged reliability in South Africa, the company is shifting gears with a bold new offering. The highly anticipated Scorpio-N Adventure Edition has officially broken cover. Built on the bones of the popular Z8 trim, this special edition isn’t just a celebration — it’s a declaration of Mahindra’s intent to redefine the 7-seat off-road vehicle segment.
The Scorpio-N has been a key offering in Mahindra’s lineup. With the Adventure Edition, Mahindra is doubling down on its commitment to cater to the adventurous spirit of its customers, equipping the SUV with an impressive array of off-road features.
The Scorpio-N Adventure Edition sets itself apart with significant upgrades designed for conquering rugged terrains. Gone are the regular bumpers, replaced by robust steel versions at both front and rear. These new bumpers not only enhance the vehicle’s approach and departure angles but also integrate recovery points for added utility in challenging situations.
Underneath, the Adventure Edition boasts metal skid and belly plates, providing crucial protection against hard impacts during off-road excursions. The SUV stands taller thanks to a raised suspension setup, offering improved ground clearance for tackling obstacles with confidence.
Tyre upgrades further bolster the Adventure Edition’s off-road prowess. Mahindra has swapped out the standard Z8’s 255/60 R18 road tyres for more capable 265/60 R18 all-terrain tyres, paired with custom 18-inch alloy wheels. A roof rack adds extra storage capacity for those long trips into the wilderness, while subtle “Adventure” badging sets this special edition apart from its standard siblings.
Under the hood, the Adventure Edition retains the capable 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine found in the standard Scorpio-N lineup. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, it delivers an impressive 129kW of power and 400Nm of torque, ensuring the SUV has plenty of grunt for both on-road cruising and off-road challenges.
The Scorpio-N Adventure Edition comes equipped with a range of technologies to enhance its off-road prowess. The selectable 4Xplor four-wheel-drive system offers rear-wheel-drive, four-wheel-high, and four-wheel-low settings to tackle various terrains. Multiple drive modes, including Normal, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Rut, and Sand, allow drivers to optimise the vehicle’s performance for specific conditions.
For serious off-roading, the Adventure Edition features both a mechanical rear-locking differential and an electronic brake-locking differential. Hill hold and hill descent control round out the package, providing drivers with confidence on steep inclines and declines.
This premium offering comes with Mahindra’s commitment to quality, backed by a 5-year/150,000km warranty and a 5-year/110,000km service plan.
The Z4 4×2 AT and Z8 4×4 AT represent this SUV lineup‘s base and mid-range options, with significant differences in capabilities and features. The Z4 4×2 AT is a two-wheel drive model with basic safety features, front airbags, and rear parking sensors. It comes with an 8″ touchscreen infotainment system, steel wheels with covers, and a silver front grille. This model is slightly shorter in height and focuses on providing essential SUV features for on-road use.
In contrast, the Z8 4×4 AT offers a more robust package with four-wheel drive capabilities. It includes advanced safety features like Hill Hold Control and Driver Drowsiness Detection, along with front, side, and curtain airbags. The Z8 4×4 AT boasts improved aesthetics with a chrome front grille, LED projector headlamps, and alloy wheels. It also features the 4XPLOR Intelligent 4×4 System with selectable terrain modes, making it more suitable for off-road adventures. While both models share the same engine specifications, the Z8 4×4 AT provides a more premium and capable driving experience overall.

Mahindra has officially captured the hearts of adventurous South Africans, with its Scorpio-N claiming two top honours at the 2024 Old Mutual Insure South African Car of the Year Competition this May.
The Scorpio-N, a true embodiment of adventure and versatility, emerged as the undisputed winner in the Adventure SUV of the Year category, outshining its rivals. But the accolades didn’t stop there – in a surprising twist, the Scorpio-N also clinched the coveted Motor Enthusiast of the Year Award.
The Scorpio-N emerged as the clear winner among 18 finalists meticulously selected from a pool of 80 qualifying vehicles. This is no easy feat as the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ), is renowned for their stringent evaluation process.
Over several gruelling days, the finalists were put through their paces, subjected to rigorous dynamic and static testing, and scrutinised against their competitors and market performance. Detailed market share statistics and customer feedback from Lightstone Auto, the official automotive industry data aggregator, further informed the evaluation process.
Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa, beamed with pride, stating, “This major award truly humbles us. It signals a new era that follows two decades of investment in our South African operations, our dealer network, and our vehicle range to ensure that we offer a truthful partnership of man and machine in both the SUV and LCV market.”
Powered by a tried-and-tested 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel engine, the Scorpio-N packs a punch with 128.6kW of power and a robust 400Nm of torque. Mated to a smooth 6-speed automatic torque converter transmission, it offers both 4×2 and 4×4 drive configurations, ensuring versatility on and off the beaten track.
The Scorpio-N also stands out as one of the most affordable 7-seat off-roading SUVs in the market, making it an attractive choice for adventure-seekers and families alike. Mahindra’s commitment to delivering honest and real value for money has been the driving force behind its success. The Scorpio-N embodies this philosophy.

South Africa is a land of incredible natural beauty and diverse landscapes. From winding mountain passes and dusty rural roads, to tight parking spaces in the inner cities. To navigate these challenging terrains, you need a vehicle that can handle it all with confidence. Enter the Mahindra Scorpio-N, a rugged SUV designed to conquer any terrain you throw its way!
Here are 10 reasons why the Mahindra Scorpio-N is exceptionally well-suited for both on-road and off-road conditions in South Africa.
The Scorpio-N’s 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel engine is an absolute powerhouse. Generating a potent 128kW of power and 400Nm of torque, it provides the kind of muscle you’d expect from a much larger displacement engine.
This turbocharge gives the Scorpio-N the ability to climb steep hills easily, pull heavy trailers or loads, and simply power over even the roughest, toughest off-road terrain. Despite being so strong, this engine remains nicely refined and quiet for normal driving, thanks to some clever engineering tricks like specialised valve seals and vibration dampers.
Despite its robust performance, the Mahindra Scorpio-N sips fuel at a remarkably frugal rate of close to just 6.9 litres per 100km. This makes it an ideal companion for long-distance journeys across South Africa’s vast landscapes. With this kind of fuel efficiency, the Scorpio-N allows you to go much farther between refuelling stops compared to thirstier SUVs in its class.
Equipped with Mahindra’s advanced 4XPLOR system, the Scorpio-N allows you to simply dial in the appropriate mode for sand, mud, snow or rocky conditions to optimise traction and handling on any terrain.
This state-of-the-art technology takes the guesswork out of navigating South Africa’s diverse landscapes. With just the turn of a dial, 4XPLOR automatically calibrates the engine, transmission, traction control and differentials to perfectly suit the driving surface.
For instance, in the dedicated ‘Mud’ mode, the system will adjust the throttle response and gear changes for maximum torque delivery to cut through sticky situations. It also tailors the traction control and differential locking to find grip where available.
From shift-on-the-fly 4WD and an auto differential lock to hill descent control, the Scorpio-N packs an array of off-road hardware that empowers you to conquer even the most daunting landscapes.
Auto Differential Lock can automatically transfer torque to the wheels with the most grip when it detects slippage. It ensures you can keep forging ahead when the going gets greasy or uneven.
When navigating steep descents off-road, Hill Descent Control automatically applies the brakes in a controlled manner to maintain a steady, safe speed without you having to manually ride the pedals.
The Scorpio-N has a premium, thoughtfully designed cabin that combines luxury with modern technology. Plush leather seating provides superior comfort and support, even on long marathons behind the wheel. Soft-touch materials with satin chrome and metallic accents create an upscale, refined ambience.
The multifunction steering wheel puts key controls at your fingertips. You also get dual-zone climate control to keep all passengers at their ideal temperature.
Never feel disconnected, even when venturing off the beaten path. When it comes to tech amenities, the Scorpio-N delivers. The centrepiece has an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system offering wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, navigation, and voice commands. Premium audio surrounds you with immersive sound quality.
The Scorpio-N is well known for its excellent safety features and rating. It starts with a reinforced body structure engineered to provide exceptional occupant protection in the event of a collision. The chassis uses advanced ultra-high-strength steel and strategic crumple zones to absorb and channel impact forces away from the cabin.
Within that rigid safety cell, the Scorpio-N protects you with 6 airbags strategically positioned around the front and sides. These include dual front airbags, side airbags for the front row, and side curtain airbags running the length of both rows.
Keeping you firmly planted comes courtesy of the electronic stability control system. For added confidence in slippery conditions like rain or loose surfaces, the anti-lock brakes prevent wheel lockup to maintain steering ability during hard braking. Electronic brake force distribution optimises stopping power based on the vehicle’s load.
Other intelligent driving aids include rear parking sensors, a rear camera, and even a driver drowsiness monitor that can detect signs of fatigue and alert you to take a break.
The Scorpio-N’s ruggedly engineered body-on-frame chassis delivers exceptional durability to handle even the most punishing off-road conditions and poorly maintained backroads.
With its utilitarian aesthetic, bold lines and premium LED lighting signatures, the Scorpio-N perfectly blends head-turning style with true go-anywhere capability. It’s at home not only in the most rugged places but also in urban areas.
When you factor in its robust performance, premium features, off-road prowess and safety, the Scorpio-N represents an unbeatable value in the SUV segment.
Whether conquering South Africa’s wildly varied landscapes or commuting comfortably, the Mahindra Scorpio-N delivers the perfect blend of on-road refinement and off-road prowess. Explore its full capabilities today.
