Mahindra SUVs safest
Safety is no longer a luxury in the automotive world; it is a necessity. And Mahindra has taken this commitment to heart, consistently setting benchmarks in vehicle safety. The latest crash test results from the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) have further cemented Mahindra’s reputation as a leader in this arena. With the XUV300, Thar ROXX, and XUV400 all securing coveted five-star safety ratings, Mahindra is proving that safety is integral to its DNA.
Let’s take a look at what makes these achievements so remarkable and why they matter to drivers everywhere.
The journey begins with the Mahindra XUV300, a compact SUV that has redefined safety standards. Proudly hailed as the “Safest Car in Africa,” the XUV300 achieved top scores in the Global NCAP crash tests. This accolade isn’t just a feather in Mahindra’s cap; it’s a testament to the brand’s dedication to engineering excellence. Packed with features like six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and ISOFIX child seat anchors, the XUV300 sets a gold standard for safety in its segment.
Now, with Bharat NCAP’s latest results, the XUV300 continues its winning streak. Scoring 29.36 points out of 32 for adult occupant protection and 43 out of 49 for child occupant protection, this SUV reaffirms Mahindra’s unwavering commitment to keeping families safe on the road.
The Mahindra Thar ROXX (not currently available in South Africa) has made history by becoming the first body-on-frame SUV to achieve a five-star Bharat NCAP rating. This rugged SUV, built to conquer both urban jungles and off-road trails, has shattered stereotypes about body-on-frame vehicles being less safe.
The Thar ROXX excelled in testing, scoring an impressive 31.09 points for adult occupant protection and 45 points for child safety. Features like six airbags, ESC, a Brake Locking Differential (BLD), and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as Lane Departure Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking have made the Thar ROXX a trailblazer in its category.
Mahindra’s innovation isn’t limited to traditional vehicles. The XUV400, the brand’s first electric SUV, has also joined the five-star club. This achievement is a significant milestone, as it showcases Mahindra’s ability to deliver safety without compromising the unique requirements of electric vehicles.
In Bharat NCAP’s tests, the XUV400 earned 30.38 points in adult occupant protection and 43 points in child safety. Its safety arsenal includes six airbags, ISOFIX anchors, and advanced braking systems. Additionally, features like adaptive reverse cameras and all-around disc brakes ensure comprehensive safety for both drivers and passengers.
Mahindra South Africa has expressed interest in introducing this electric SUV to the local market and is conducting feasibility studies to assess its viability.
These consecutive five-star safety ratings are more than just accolades; they reflect Mahindra’s dedication to meticulous engineering and cutting-edge innovation. Each vehicle’s safety features are the result of rigorous research, extensive testing, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Mahindra’s approach to safety begins with the basics: high-strength steel frames, strategically designed crumple zones, and advanced restraint systems. It then adds layers of technology, from ESC and ADAS to state-of-the-art airbag systems, creating vehicles that excel in real-world scenarios and controlled tests alike.
What’s more, the focus on safety doesn’t stop with passengers. Features like pedestrian protection and tyre pressure monitoring ensure that every road user benefits from their commitment to safer roads.
In South Africa, where road safety is a pressing concern, Mahindra’s advancements are a beacon of hope. Vehicles like the XUV300 offer peace of mind to drivers and passengers, ideal for families and adventurers alike. Whether navigating bustling city streets or venturing off the beaten path, South African drivers can trust that Mahindra’s vehicles are built with their safety in mind.
Mahindra’s streak of five-star ratings is no coincidence. It’s the result of decades of experience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to safety. As Mahindra continues to push the envelope, drivers can expect even more exciting developments on the horizon.

Mahindra SA Hits Milestone 20,000 Pik Up Production
The Mahindra lineup of SUVs gets a lot of attention for a good reason. The Indian automaker has been making great strides in the SA market and continues pushing its products forward with new models. If you’re in the market for a well-balanced SUV, you are in for a treat. The much-awaited 2024 Mahindra XUV 3XO, a reimagined version of the XUV300, made its debut on South African roads at the end of September 2024. With this launch, South Africa is the first market outside of India to welcome the all-new Mahindra XUV 3XO.
With its refreshed design, cutting-edge technology, and robust powertrain options, Mahindra’s compact SUV is set to make a strong impression in a competitive market. Let’s explore what makes the XUV 3XO a game-changer and why it’s poised to become a favourite among South African drivers.
The XUV 3XO’s exterior design is a testament to Mahindra’s commitment to bold and innovative aesthetics. If you think the Mahindra XUV300’s aggressive stance is outstanding, the XUV 3XO takes it up a notch with a sharper, more refined look. The front fascia has been entirely reworked, featuring a sleeker grille and redesigned LED headlamps that provide a more modern and sophisticated appeal. The sportier bumper and the inclusion of 17” diamond-cut alloy wheels with a new design language only add to the SUV’s aggressive persona.
If you are an adventurous driver, you will be sure to make a statement on the road in your off-road trips as well as the urban landscape drives.
The XUV 3XO will have significant interior upgrades, most notably in its dashboard and infotainment system. The centrepiece of the interior redesign is a larger, high-definition screen (10.25” digital cluster and 10.25” infotainment system) that integrates seamlessly with Mahindra’s updated infotainment suite. Music lovers and tech-savvy drivers will love the wireless charging, 65W USB-C charging point, and seamless connectivity with Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Plus, you can now enjoy your favourite tunes in quality sound thanks to the Harman Kardon premium audio system with an amplifier and subwoofer.
But what’s technology without comfort? The plush leatherette seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and soft-touch materials on the dashboard and door trims will make your long journeys feel like a first-class experience. Additional cutting-edge features include the largest-in-class SkyroofTM and a 360-degree surround view system with blind view monitor on the top-spec models.
Safety and performance remain the core aspects of any SUV. Mahindra understands this too well to retain the high-performance powertrain options from the XUV300. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel engines are known for their balance of power and efficiency. These engines deliver reliable performance across various terrains; your countryside adventures will be as good as your city drives.
Undoubtedly, the XUV 3XO is one of the safest options in its class. It’s expected to have advanced security features including 6 airbags, adaptive cruise control, new-generation electronic stability control, and other driver-assist systems, ensuring peace of mind for both the driver and passengers.
The 2024 Mahindra XUV 3XO is far off from a rebrand. It’s a complete reimagining of the SUV, bringing a fresh new vibe to the lineup. Mahindra promises to deliver a driving experience that blends style, technology, and safety, all while retaining the robust performance it’s known for. We’re hopeful that the XUV3XO will live up to its promise.

Here at Group1 Mahindra, we take your safety very seriously. That’s why we’re thrilled to remind savvy auto enthusiasts (like you!) that the Mahindra XUV300 achieved a fantastic 5-star adult occupant protection rating and a 4-star child occupant protection rating from the Global NCAP! But what exactly is Global NCAP, and why is this rating such a big deal?
Imagine a world where car safety standards are consistent everywhere you go. That’s the goal of Global NCAP, a collaboration of independent crash testing programs from different regions. By working together, they share knowledge, develop common testing methods, and push car manufacturers to prioritise safety on a global scale.
Here’s how they do it: Global NCAP conducts rigorous crash tests that simulate real-world collisions. They stage a frontal offset crash, mimicking a scenario where two cars of similar weight collide head-on at 64 kilometres per hour. But to reflect real-world crashes even more accurately, only 40% of the front part of the car hits the barrier.
Based on the car’s performance in this test, they assess adult occupant protection, and child occupant protection, and factor in additional safety features. Electronic Stability Control (ESC), side curtain airbags, and even rear seatbelt reminders all play a crucial role in achieving a higher star rating. The rating system is simple: 1 star is the least safe, and 5 stars is the top score, signifying the best possible protection for you and your passengers.
Global NCAP keeps evolving its test protocols to stay relevant. In July 2022, they introduced tougher requirements, making side-impact protection, ESC, pedestrian protection, and side curtain airbags mandatory for achieving the highest ratings.
The XUV300’s impressive 5-star adult occupant protection rating and 4-star child occupant protection rating pay testament to Mahindra’s commitment to your safety on the road. This means the XUV300 is built to offer exceptional protection for you and your loved ones in the event of a collision.
Consider this: South African roads are known for having a high collision rate. According to a global report by the Road Safety Facility, a staggering 83% of road crash fatalities and injuries occur within the economically productive age groups (15-64 years old). This highlights the critical need for vehicles that prioritise occupant safety.
While there isn’t comprehensive data available for all of 2023/4 yet, the South African Department of Transport reported a decline of 2.3% in fatal crashes during the recent 2023/24 festive season compared to the same period the prior year. This suggests some progress, but there’s still a long way to go. In fact, human factors were attributed to a whopping 80.8% of crashes over the festive season. This emphasises the importance of driver awareness and responsible behaviour on the road.
At Group1 Mahindra, we believe that feeling safe and secure is paramount. Knowing that the XUV300 boasts such a strong Global NCAP rating gives you one less thing to worry about behind the wheel. So, if you’re looking for a compact SUV that prioritises safety without compromising on style or performance, then the XUV300 might just be the perfect fit for you.

Mahindra XUV300 – Officially the safest car in Africa!
Mahindra has been in South Africa for a couple of decades, offering tough-as-nails work vehicles. Then it started offering classy and quality SUVs at very good prices – and these were immediately successful. But now it has released its most appealing car yet with the launch of the stunning 2022 Mahindra XUV300. The reason it is so attractive is not just because it is a stunning car – which it is – or all the luxury features – which it has. The reason we first took notice is that it comes with a 5-star Global NCAP rating, the first car from India to do so and the only one in Africa to carry that title.
The XUV300 comes in three trim levels, the W4, W6 and the W8. All three are loaded with safety features, but let’s look at the W8’s safety pedigree. First in segment 7 airbags and disc brakes on all four wheels, hill-start assist, heated mirrors for chilly mornings, electronic stability control, fog lamps, front parking sensor and rear parking assist and even a tyre position indicator. ISOFIX anchors will keep the kiddies safe too.
Each trim level comes with the choice of a 1.2-litre turbo petrol or 1.5-litre turbo diesel, both engines with a 6-speed manual transmission. The petrol will give you 81 kW and 200 Nm, while the impressive diesel will give you 85.8 kW and class-leading 300 Nm of torque. The petrol uses 6.33-litres per 100km, while the frugal diesel sips only 4.84-litres per 100km.
The exterior is stunning, nicely balanced with a floating roof design, dual-tone roof rails and 16 – 17-inch alloy wheels. Then you get good ground clearance, high-profile tyres and a sturdy body for when you want to go on the road less travelled. Projector headlights with DRL (daytime running lights), LED taillights and – a nice touch – LED indicators on the side mirrors all add wonderfully to the general good looks.
The cabin is also trim level-dependent, but the top model gives you great leatherette seats, dual-zone climate control with 3 memory settings, three steering modes and a sunroof. Think about the dual-zone climate control for a moment. You know when the aircon is just right for you, but your passenger complains that it is too cold. So: dual-zone, one for each of you – marvellous!
You also get a 17.8cm touchscreen with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay ability, Bluetooth, USB and AUX. Push to start and keyless entry feels very James Bond, as does the eco app that can talk to your smartphone and smartwatch.
The Mahindra XUV300 not only gives you the safest drive in its class, but it also gives you all the luxury features you would want, and all this is wrapped in a very good-looking car. But how is the drive? The only way to find out is to book a test drive.
