2025 is set to be a massive year for new cars. South African motorists will be spoiled for choice, with exciting releases from long-standing favourites and the debut of promising new brands. Chery is no stranger to delivering value-packed vehicles, and its sustained local onslaught shows no signs of letting up. Building on its momentum, the Wuhu-based automaker is gearing up for an ambitious rollout of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), spanning its entire lineup (almost) from the very first quarter of the year.
Let’s look closer at what’s on the horizon for Chery in 2025.
Chery’s strategy for 2025 centres around expanding its lineup of hybrid and electric vehicles, reflecting a broader industry trend towards cleaner, more efficient transportation that doesn’t compromise on luxury or performance. This move is part of Chery’s global push to become a leader in the NEV market, building on its success in China where it has seen substantial growth in hybrid and electric vehicle sales.
The Tiggo 7 Pro will receive its second and most extensive facelift to date, including a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. This model combines a 1.5 T-GDI engine with dual electric motors and a 19.27-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, producing 265 kW and offering an all-electric range of around 80 km.
The facelifted Tiggo 8 Pro will also introduce a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, featuring the same dual electric motors and battery pack as the Tiggo 7 Pro but with a reduced power output of 240 kW.
Building on the success of the Tiggo 4 Pro, Chery will introduce a hybrid version of the Tiggo Cross in the 2nd quarter of 2025, further expanding its compact SUV offerings in the local market.
Although initially expected earlier, the Tiggo 9 Pro will now launch in the third quarter of 2025. The Tiggo 9 will be Chery’s flagship model in South Africa, offering both petrol and plug-in hybrid options. The hybrid version will feature a sophisticated powertrain combining a 2.0 T-GDI engine with plug-in hybrid technology, providing a reported 265 kW.
Beyond the Tiggo range, Chery is set to launch other notable models under the auspices of its OMODA and JAECOO (O&J) sub-brands. The OMODA C9, a plug-in hybrid version is set to join the line-up. Presently, the C9 PHEV combines a 1.5l four-cylinder petrol engine with up to three electric motors. A plug-in hybrid version of the popular JAECOO J7 is in the works as well. The Jaecoo J6, an all-electric crossover with light off-roading capabilities, is also set to tap into South Africa’s growing EV market.
We can only assume that more details of the SUVs will be announced closer to their expected launch dates throughout the year.

Chery’s latest crossover, the Chery Tiggo Cross, has recently made its debut in South Africa, slotting in between the Tiggo 4 Pro and the larger Tiggo 7 Pro. Some would say the Chery Tiggo Cross is a range-topping version of the Tiggo 4. What’s interesting right off the bat is that the Tiggo Cross is breaking away from the usual naming convention that Chery has used for its Tiggo lineup. In this blog, we explore where the Tiggo Cross fits within Chery’s SUV lineup, highlighting its features and how it compares to its siblings..
Chery has had a winner with the Tiggo 4, so the Tiggo Cross, a more technically advanced and stylish model, is sure to capture attention as well. The Tiggo Cross is designed to appeal to style-conscious young professionals and urban drivers but also offers enough space for family adventures. At 4,350mm, it’s an attractive option for consumers who want a bit more space without committing to a full-sized SUV.
Performance and Features
The Tiggo Cross, Tiggo 4 Pro, and the base Tiggo 7 Pro share the same engine specifications, featuring a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine that produces 108 kW of power and 210 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
The Tiggo Cross stands out with its modern design elements and enhanced interior features compared to its older sibling. It is easily distinguishable from the rest by its prominent gloss black grille featuring a diamond-pattern mesh, complemented by triple-element LED headlamps. Black wing-like elements extend from the grille towards the bumper, framed by vertical daytime running light clusters on each side.
Similar to the larger Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro, the new Tiggo Cross boasts a spacious cabin with advanced technology, such as dual 10.25-inch screens (standard) and various driver-assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, and lane departure warning, available on the higher-spec Elite trim. Only two trims are available.
Indeed, the Tiggo Cross’s competitive pricing, combined with its robust tech, safety specifications, and stylish design elements, positions it well within Chery’s expanding portfolio in South Africa.
Like its siblings, the Tiggo Cross comes with Chery’s industry-leading 10-year/1-million-kilometre engine warranty, a comprehensive 5-year/150,000-kilometre vehicle warranty, and roadside assistance for a full five years.
To better understand the Tiggo Cross’s position, let’s compare it with other Tiggo models based on key specifications and features*.

The world of electric vehicles (EVs) is buzzing with innovation, and at the centre of it all stands Chery. The automotive giant is charging ahead – pun intended – with its plans to mass-produce solid-state sodium-ion batteries. These groundbreaking advancements not only promise to redefine the future of EVs but also set a new benchmark for sustainable energy storage.
Let’s explore how Chery’s latest endeavour is shaping up to revolutionise the industry and why it’s a development worth getting (very!) excited about.
If you’ve followed Chery’s technological milestones, you’ll know they’re no strangers to innovation. Earlier this year, we explored their New Energy Technology strategies – a glimpse into Chery’s relentless pursuit of cleaner, smarter energy solutions. Now, they’re stepping up their game with solid-state sodium-ion batteries, a move that could transform how we power our vehicles and cities.
Solid-state batteries have long been hailed as the next big thing in energy storage. By replacing traditional liquid electrolytes with solid materials, these batteries promise enhanced safety, longer lifespans, and increased energy density. Pair that with the abundant availability of sodium, and you have a recipe for a more cost-effective and sustainable battery solution.
The buzz surrounding Chery’s solid-state sodium-ion batteries is fuelled by their new manufacturing plant in Wuhu, Anhui Province. This cutting-edge facility – developed in collaboration with Anhui Anwa New Energy Co. – boasts an initial production capacity of 5 GWh, with ambitious plans to scale up in the coming years. The first phase of this project spans a massive 100,000 square metres, with an investment of approximately $1.25 billion.
At this facility, Chery aims to produce batteries with energy densities starting at 280 Wh/kg, a significant improvement over traditional lithium-ion alternatives. By 2027, their third-generation batteries are projected to hit an impressive 500 Wh/kg, paving the way for longer EV ranges and faster charging times.
Sodium-ion batteries are emerging as a formidable alternative to lithium-ion technology for several reasons:
Chery’s ambitious plans wouldn’t be possible without strategic partnerships. Collaborating with CATL – a leader in battery manufacturing – Chery is leveraging hybrid systems that combine sodium-ion and lithium-ion technologies. This innovative approach enhances range and reduces costs, making it a win-win for both manufacturers and consumers.
In addition to CATL, partnerships with Anhui Anwa New Energy Co. and Gotion Hi-Tech are bolstering Chery’s production capabilities. These alliances underscore Chery’s commitment to leading the charge in the global transition to sustainable energy.
Imagine an EV that’s not only more affordable but also capable of travelling up to 400 kilometres on a single charge. That’s the promise of Chery’s upcoming sodium-ion battery-powered vehicles. And it doesn’t stop there – their high-density solid-state batteries aim to deliver ranges that rival the best in the industry.
These innovations address one of the biggest concerns among potential EV buyers: range anxiety. By pushing the boundaries of battery technology, Chery is making EVs a more viable option for everyday drivers.
While the future of solid-state sodium-ion batteries looks bright, challenges remain. Manufacturing complexities and supply chain dynamics need to be addressed to ensure the technology’s long-term viability. However, with Chery’s proven track record and strategic vision, there’s every reason to believe they’ll overcome these hurdles.
For South African consumers, Chery’s advancements represent a significant opportunity. Affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly EVs could soon become a reality on our roads. This shift not only supports local efforts to reduce carbon emissions but also aligns with global trends toward sustainable mobility.
As a proud Chery dealer, we’re thrilled to witness these developments firsthand. It’s innovations like these that reinforce our confidence in Chery’s ability to deliver exceptional vehicles that meet the needs of today’s drivers.
The world of EVs is evolving rapidly, and Chery is at the forefront of this exciting journey. To stay informed about the latest developments, including updates on solid-state sodium-ion batteries and other groundbreaking technologies, check back soon on the Group1 Chery blog. We’re committed to bringing you the most relevant and up-to-date news from the automotive world.

South Africa’s bakkie market is an arena few brands dare to challenge. Dominated by stalwarts like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, it takes a unique blend of rugged reliability, style, and innovation to make a mark. Enter Chery, a brand that has already impressed South African SUV buyers and is now eyeing the bakkie segment with its upcoming Chery KP11.
But can this new bakkie truly compete in a market as bakkie-crazy as ours? Let’s delve into the story behind Chery’s bold entry and why this ambitious move could disrupt the SA bakkie scene.
Chery isn’t new to the South African market, with its Tiggo range of SUVs turning heads and winning over fans. This success has spurred the automaker to explore other high-demand categories, and naturally, the bakkie market is an enticing target.
The Chery KP11 bakkie concept was first unveiled at Chery’s International User Summit in Wuhu, China. Although its debut was somewhat low-key, the KP11’s sleek design and rugged build clearly signaled that Chery’s designers had one thing in mind: a bakkie that could take on South Africa’s best.
The KP11 looks every bit the part, with strong, angular fenders, robust wheel arches, and all-terrain tyres. These aren’t mere design elements—they’re essential for taking on South Africa’s diverse landscapes, from urban streets to gravel roads and rocky trails. The monocoque chassis, derived from Chery’s SUV experience, promises smoother handling and added comfort.
This design choice, however, may divide opinion in our market, where ladder-frame chassis are often favoured for heavy-duty off-roading. Still, with Chery’s attention to off-road features, including ample ground clearance and reinforced bumpers, the KP11 aims to hold its own in rugged conditions.
Powertrain options are where Chery’s approach could be a game-changer. Rather than offering traditional diesel engines, which dominate the SA bakkie market, Chery has hinted at petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options. This shift reflects the brand’s long-term vision, possibly aligning with global moves towards electrification. Imagine a bakkie that not only handles tough terrains but also offers a quieter, more fuel-efficient PHEV mode for city driving—an enticing prospect as fuel prices continue to soar.
While diesel may be absent, the KP11’s power lineup isn’t lacking. It’s expected that Chery will adapt its robust 2.4-litre turbo petrol engine for this bakkie, delivering solid torque and performance. The PHEV variant could be even more thrilling, possibly drawing from Chery’s in-house technology seen in other models, offering substantial horsepower and torque without the emissions of traditional diesel. The choice to go hybrid could be Chery’s ace in the hole, positioning the KP11 as a forward-thinking, eco-friendly alternative in the South African market.
Chery has its sights set on the lifestyle segment, an area where consumers want their bakkies to be as comfortable on city streets as they are capable of off-road. With styling cues from Chery’s sleek SUV lineup, the KP11 is designed to stand out with a modern, almost luxurious aesthetic.
The dual-cab layout, along with innovative features like LED lighting and a high-tech cabin, gives the KP11 an upscale appeal. The spacious interior and potential tech offerings—such as dual screens and advanced connectivity—align with South Africans’ growing demand for multi-purpose, tech-savvy vehicles.
And while the KP11 is the main attraction, Chery isn’t stopping there. They’re also considering a smaller, Tiggo Cross-based bakkie aimed at urban drivers who still crave the utility and style of a bakkie without needing the full one-tonne capacity. This “passenger pick-up” concept could cater to those looking for a more affordable, versatile option, making Chery’s bakkie lineup accessible to a wider audience.
It’s no secret that the South African bakkie market is fiercely loyal to certain brands. However, Chery’s recent success in the SUV segment shows that South African buyers are open to exploring new options—especially when the value proposition is strong.
The KP11’s mix of durability, modern tech, and hybrid power options could attract a diverse audience, from urban professionals looking for a stylish, fuel-efficient vehicle to adventure-seekers who need a bakkie with off-road grit.
While rivals like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max have long held sway, Chery is banking on the KP11’s unique features to set it apart. In a market gradually warming to hybrids, Chery’s gamble on petrol and PHEV options could attract consumers looking to future-proof their vehicles, especially as more cities worldwide move towards green vehicle initiatives.
For Chery, this isn’t just about launching a new model—it’s a chance to make a lasting impression in a high-stakes market. South Africa’s love for bakkies is unmatched, and Chery’s investment in the KP11 reflects a deep understanding of this passion. The KP11 is being built with South African drivers in mind, with features and capabilities that aim to meet our diverse driving needs.
Chery has done more than just dip its toe into the South African market—it’s making strides to become a household name. From the highly successful Tiggo series to now potentially the KP11, Chery’s commitment to quality and innovation is setting it up as a serious competitor in the automotive landscape.
The excitement around Chery’s new KP11 bakkie is only just beginning. If you’re as thrilled as we are to see where Chery takes this next chapter, be sure to follow Group1 Chery’s pages on Facebook. Stay connected with our Chery dealerships across South Africa to catch the latest news, release dates, and more insights into the KP11 and other Chery innovations.
